As your friends and family raise their glasses and propose a toast to you, remain seated and don't raise your glass in return, clap or drink. Smile and nod in acknowledgement, then thank them once they have finished giving the toast.

You and/or your fiance can respond to the toast with a toast of your own to thank him for coming. You can also offer a toast to thank guests for coming and share your anticipation for the joining of your two families.

When you are offering your toast, stand if you have been sitting and raise your glass to begin the toast. Once you finish speaking, raise your glass and invite others to join you in the toast and sip from your glass.

From When Harry Met Sally
I love that you get cold
When it's seventy one degrees out,
An hour and a half to order a sandwich,
I love that you get a little crinkle
Above your nose
When you're looking at me like I'm nuts,
I love that after I spend a day with you
I can still smell your perfume on my clothes
And I love that you are the last person
And it's not because it's New Year's Eve.
I came here tonight because
When you realize you want to spend
The rest of your life with somebody,
You want the rest of the life
To start as soon as possible.

From Chasing Amy
I love you. And not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I'm sure that's what you'll call it. And it's not because you're unattainable. I love you. Very simply, very truly.

The engagement party is the official celebration of your decision to spend the rest of your life with your fiance. Traditionally, there is a time during the party where family and friends toast the couple. The groom often follows the father of the bride. It is also appropriate for you, as the bride-to-be, to toast your soon to be husband.

Crafting a touching toast that expresses your love can be intimidating, however if you go with your heart and feelings, you'll be on the right track. You can also lead with a lovely quote, or use them for inspiration as you write your own. Here are some to get you started.

To love is not a part of things
Or a part of life.
To love is the WHOLE of things
And the whole of life.

In my heart is my love for you
And in my love for you life whole is.
(Venus de Medici, 'Essay on Love')

********

I love thee, I love but thee
With a love that shall not die
Till the sun grows cold
And the stars grow old.
(William Shakespeare)

*********

My love, you know you are my best friend.
You know that I'd do anything for you
And my love, let nothing come between us.
My love for you is strong and true.
(Sarah McLachlan)

*********

The power of a glance has been so much abused in love stories, that is has come to be disbelieved in. Few people dare now say that two beings have fallen in love because the have looked at each other. Yet it is in this way that love begins, and in this way only...Nothing is more real than these great shocks which two souls give each other in exchanging this spark.
(Victor Hugo - Les Miserables)

Tip: If you plan on reciting a selection that includes a famous poem or excerpt from literature, remember to practice it aloud to get the reading "correct", with pauses and emphasis in the proper places.

The father of the bride is usually the first to toast the couple, followed by the groom and other guests who wish to congratulate the happy couple.

Once you've written your speech, there are a few things to do to help prepare for the big day and ensure that your delivery is perfect!

When most people think about giving a speech, the thing they find most terrifying is thought of forgetting what they were planning on saying in front of hundreds of people. Even actors at the Academy Awards usually have written notes and you can too!

Memorizing your speech is a great intention, however if public speaking is not part of your normal routine, you may find yourself stumbling or at a loss for words during your moment in the spotlight. It's okay to write reminders on a set of index cards and have them in front of you during the toast. The notes will help remind you of the main topics you were planning on covering. At the same time, it doesn't provide every single word, so you are not able to read from the cards verbatim.

The best way to be at ease when delivering a toast is to rehearse the toast you have prepared over and over again. Read it out loud in front of the mirror, in front of friends and when you're alone in the car or exercising. This is also a great way to memorize your toast.

Before you begin your toast, take a deep breath and look around. It will feel like an eternity, but will really only take a few seconds and help ground you and the audience. Take time to go through your words - don't rush them! It may sound slow to you, but to everyone else who is listening for the very first time, it will sound completely natural. If you're feeling nervous, find friendly faces in the reception hall and pretend like you're speaking directly with them, albiet a little loudly.

When you're practicing your toast in the mirror, take care to project a confident posture and expressions. Speak clearly and enounciate your words. Look guests in the eye and survey the room so as to "envelope" it, and help them feel like you're connecting with them.

Smile and invite the guests to you in congratulating the new bride and groom!

If you've never given a toast before, there are a few things to keep in mind to make your first toast as successful as possible.

First, always make sure that your glass, along with everyone else's are filled before you propose the toast. Toasts can be offered with champagne, wine, a mixed drink or non-alcoholic punch. It should not be offered with tea, coffee or water. The server should fill the glasses of the bride first, then the groom, maid of honor, parents and finally the best man.

Once everyone has a glass and your attention, raise your glass in your right hand. Hold your arm straight out from the shoulder, the traditional toasting position that conveys that you offer it in friendship.

If you are the one being toasted, you do not stand, raise your glass or take a sip of your drink. You do thank your toaster or smile graciously and nod. You do not have to return the toast.

Here are some of our suggestions for the Bride's toast to the groom during the rehearsal or reception dinners:

Quotations To Incorporate
"There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness." - Nietzsche

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." - Lao Tzu

"Age does not protect you from love but love to some extent love protects you from age." - Jeanne Moreau

The Bride's Toast To Her Groom
Thank you all for being with us on this very special day and helping us make beautiful memories!

I would like to take a moment and offer a toast to my new husband, Jack. You are the love of my life and I am so excited to begin spending the rest of my life with you.

It reminds me of famous quote made by actress Jeanne Moreau, when she said "Age does not protect you from love but love, to some extent love protects you from age.". When we celebrate this day each year, may our friends and family remark upon the fountain of youth we have found and I will reply it is all because of the depth of our love.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please raise your glasses with me and toast my new husband, Jack. I'll love you always.

Salut!
