The purpose of an engagement parties are rarely a surprise for guests, however it is common for the father of the bride-to-be to make a formal announcement of the engagement in the form of a toast.
Many fathers may offer a toast that is as simple as welcoming guests to the happy occasion and ask them to join him in wishing them well.
One example could be something like, "We are so pleased that you could all join us at this party to announce Rebecca's engagement to John! I would like to propose a toast to both of them, wishing them many years of happiness. Please join me in wishing them love and happiness!"

As your friends and family raise their glasses and propose a toast to you, remain seated and don't raise your glass in return, clap or drink. Smile and nod in acknowledgement, then thank them once they have finished giving the toast.
