Your First Toast

If you've never given a toast before, there are a few things to keep in mind to make your first toast as successful as possible.

First, always make sure that your glass, along with everyone else's are filled before you propose the toast. Toasts can be offered with champagne, wine, a mixed drink or non-alcoholic punch. It should not be offered with tea, coffee or water. The server should fill the glasses of the bride first, then the groom, maid of honor, parents and finally the best man.

There are a few very simple steps to consider while preparing your sentiments that will help you compose and deliver the perfect toast.

Step One
Know what you are going to say. Take the time to think about what you are going to say and write it down. You can definitely bring notes with you, and they may help you feel less nervous to know you have a back-up copy in your pocket. It's always nice to be able to recite your words from memory, but if you've taken the time to construct a touching speech, your words will shine through whether you read it or speak from memory.

Toasting - What About The Alcohol??

A toast is properly given with a glass of champagne or other alcohol in hand.

  • You'll want to memorize your toast and practice the effect of holding a microphone and a glass at the same time.
  • If you know you're going to be toasting the wedding couple, refrain from drinking until after you've had an opportunity to speak.
  • Sip your champagne - weddings are not the place for chugging. Be careful when clinking glasses as crystal is much more delicate than beer mugs.
  • Raise your glass at the beginning of the toast and take a sip at the end. It is bad form to drink during a toast.

When you are being toasted, you should just sit and smile! If you feel like returning the thought, you can stand and return the toast. Your return toast should be short and concise.
