There are a few very simple steps to consider while preparing your sentiments that will help you compose and deliver the perfect toast.
Step One
Know what you are going to say. Take the time to think about what you are going to say and write it down. You can definitely bring notes with you, and they may help you feel less nervous to know you have a back-up copy in your pocket. It's always nice to be able to recite your words from memory, but if you've taken the time to construct a touching speech, your words will shine through whether you read it or speak from memory.
Step Two
Write from the heart. Your words are meant for the bride and groom (usually), and you should express your love and best wishes eloquently. The rest of the people attending the event are of similiar mind and will respect your thoughts when they are delivered.
Step Three
If it's a large reception, take a moment to introduce yourself with a sentence or two about who you are and how you know the bride and groom.
Step Four
This is the body of your toast, where you wish the bride and groom good luck, best wishes and much love but with the twist of your personality or personal experience with them. Consider using one of the following for inspiration:
- Tell a sweet or funny story about the couple that harkens back to your excitement to see them married. Please remember to use discretion and filter out the personal stories, colorful language and less than positive recollections.
- Recount a famous quote or short poem about love, marriage, happiness, etc. There are many resources for famous quotes, including the many romantic quotes about love and marriage featured on this site.
Step Five
Keep your toast short and sweet. If you take the time to rehearse your speech, you will be able to deliver it confidently and will have an idea of how long it will take to complete. Keep in mind the old adage, "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all".
Step Six
Remember that your toast is for the bride and groom. Relax, look them in the eye as you raise your glass and say your toast with heartfelt enthusiasm. Good luck!
